Just finished two days of presenting at FOSSED 2010. Groups of educators from the world of “open source and free technology believers” met at Gould Academy in the mountain region of Bethel, Maine for 2/5 days (and nights) of learning and collaboration.
I presented in four three hour sessions, which was exhausting but extremely rewarding. My topics this year were:
- Successful implementation of Google Apps for Education (not open source, but no cost to education)
- Using Google Apps in your Classroom (with Maya Crosby from Lincoln Academy)
- Establishing a Personal Learning Network
- Web 2.0 Tools for Transforming Learning
This is a Conference that I have been part of since its inception eight years ago. I am always astounded at the devotion and desire of the attendees to make a difference in education.
This week I am co-facilitate the “connected leadership moodle meet. These are free and open Professional Learning Potlucks in a Moodle environment. They are part of the CEET offerings. This week’s topic is Connected Leadership for Connected Learning: Are you ready?
I am honored and excited to be part of this progressive group.
What is the Community of Expertise in Educational Technology (CEET)?
The Community of Expertise in Educational Technology (CEET) is an online community of practice fostering expertise in the use of educational technologies in K-12 education. CEET aggregates information and resources on how existing and emerging educational technologies can support instructional practice and improve student engagement, satisfaction, and achievement. CEET is intended to support BC educators in understanding and using these emerging educational technologies.
Although it was initiated and continues to be financially supported by the British Columbia Ministry of Education, CEET belongs to its members. It is they who give the community its life and value, and they who will decide its direction and future.
I have been invited to be the guest speaker to share my experience with Wikispaces Private Label. Through a single sign on system with Moodle, we have established a very user friendly collaboration environment for students and staff.

Looking forward to the summer meeting at the end of July in Washington, D.C.
Today we finished another year of Webheads. BAW, Becoming a Webhead, is one of the EVO six week sessions that takes place every year. I have been part of this group for a number of years and each session just gets better. From our two wonderful moderators, Dafne Gonzalez and Teresa Almeida d’Eça, to the weekly hosts and the pages of participants, it is week of collaboration and learning that never ends.
The BAW wiki has resources for everyone and the participant pages show just how dedicated this group of educators is. Take a moment to virtually enjoy the fruits of our labors.

This week I am moderating Becoming a Webhead 2010 with Mbarek Akkadar, of Morocco.
We are working with over 200 participants from around the world on Web 2.0 communication (blogs, wikis, podcasts, twitter / Social Networks). This is my 5th year with the Electronic Village Online both as a participant and as a moderator. It is a fabulous compilation of world-wide educators. I am again privileged.
A presentation with Cheryl Oakes for the teachers at Wentworth Intermediate School in Scarborough was successfully received. We demonstrated how to easily create a Professional Learning Network with other educators and begin using immediately.
Teachers learned why these networking tools are essential for today’s education. They then practiced how to embed them in their day to day activities. Hopefully, we demonstrated the power of the crowd and enabled them to experience the wisdom of many!
